In version 7, he says, Iolo introduced its own anti-virus and firewall applications previous versions had used software from Kaspersky Labs. "Admittedly, there were a few issues with the upgrade," says Faisal Habib, Iolo's director of product management. How could Iolo have released such woefully broken software and apparently plunged so many of its users into chaos? But I wasn't ready to let the issue drop. On e-commerce sites and review boards around the Web (like CNet and, just to scratch the surface) users of System Mechanic 7 were reporting the exact same problems I'd seen.Įventually, and after a lot of hacking that would be beyond the abilities of most non-nerd computer users, I got the software completely off my computer, got back online and bought and installed a competitor's product. When I began investigating the problem and trying to figure out how to fix it, I discovered my experience to be widespread. Which promptly rendered the PC unable to get online at all. I'd had enough, and I uninstalled the software. Multiple subsequent e-mails to customer support also went unanswered. But there were still wonky processes running on the computer and slowing things down. Suddenly, nothing in the package would launch-click an icon and nothing happened. Bad move it broke System Mechanic entirely. Figuring it would solve my problems, I installed it. In mid-January, Iolo released a critical file update. Several e-mails to customer support were answered by automated-and useless-responses, and my multiple requests to upgrade the call and get an e-mail from a human support rep went unanswered. It blocked all communication from Mozilla Firefox. Immediately after I installed it, I began having problems. But System Mechanic 7 Professional didn't work so well. When Iolo announced a new version of the software back in December, I upgraded.
